AMIGOS MARINOS

La Paz was once home to a thriving scallop and oyster fishery, however, over the past couple of decades natural and human influences have led to overfishing and habitat degradation. In recent years, this community of fishermen has collectively organized with the help of the non-governmental organization NOS Noroeste Sustentable A.C. to restore the scallop fishery by restocking the Ensenada with juvenile pen shells and collecting extensive data throughout the process.

More recently, Nicole started @amigosmarinos, a non-profit that seeks to collect and up-cycle old wetsuits that are no longer usable in the cold waters of California for these local divers. This effort not only provides fishermen with gear to continue their restoration efforts, but also relieves the financial burden of paying inflated prices for work gear.⁣ If you have an old wetsuit laying around, please consider donating it to this worthy cause. More information about their mission is below.
